Employers hire Bookkeepers (categorizing transactions, reconciling bank and credit card accounts, and closing the books each month), QuickBooks and Xero Specialists (the same work inside one platform the client already runs), Accounts Payable and Accounts Receivable Specialists (processing bills and chasing overdue invoices), Invoicing Specialists (raising invoices and keeping billing accurate), Payroll Specialists (running pay cycles and filing the related reports), and Financial Controllers (monthly reporting packs, cash-flow forecasting, and oversight of the whole finance function).
Some accounting grounding is expected: this is one category where employers are trusting you with their money. Invoicing, Accounts Payable, and Accounts Receivable roles are the realistic entry points, and an accountancy degree or a QuickBooks or Xero certification usually substitutes for years of experience. Bookkeeper roles want you to have closed a real set of books before. Payroll requires accuracy under a deadline, and Financial Controller roles are for experienced accountants (often CPAs) who can produce and explain a full reporting pack unsupervized.
Expect $6 to $34 per hour across the category. Accounts Payable, Accounts Receivable, and invoicing roles start around $6–$9 and reach $13–$19 as seniors; senior Bookkeepers and QuickBooks or Xero Specialists reach $14–$20; and Financial Controllers start at $11–$16 and reach $24–$34. Certifications and familiarity with US GAAP or Australian GST and BAS work push you toward the top of the range. You are paid directly by the employer in USD via Wise, PayPal, or direct deposit. QuickBooks Online and Xero are the two that matter most, and both offer free certification programs worth putting on your profile. QuickBooks ProAdvisor status in particular gets noticed. Add strong Excel and Google Sheets skills (pivot tables, lookups, and clean reconciliation schedules), then the supporting stack: Dext or Hubdoc for receipt capture, Bill.com for payables, Stripe for payment reconciliation, Gusto for US payroll, and NetSuite if you are aiming at larger clients. QuickBooks Desktop still appears in older US engagements.
