The main roles are Reporting Specialist (building and maintaining the recurring dashboards and weekly reports a team runs on), Data Analyst (cleaning data, answering business questions, and explaining what the numbers actually mean), SQL Analyst (writing the queries that pull and shape data from the warehouse), Business Intelligence Analyst (designing dashboards and data models the whole company uses), Business Analyst (mapping processes and translating business needs into requirements), and Market Research Analyst (competitor, pricing, and customer research).
Reporting Specialist and Market Research Analyst are the accessible entry points: strong spreadsheet skills, care with detail, and the ability to write a clear summary will get you interviews without a data job on your CV. Data Analyst and SQL Analyst roles expect you to write real SQL, including joins, aggregations, and CTEs, and employers usually test this live rather than take your word for it. Business Intelligence and Business Analyst roles are senior: they require stakeholder judgment and data modeling experience. A portfolio of three or four analyses on public datasets is the fastest bridge.
Pay runs $6 to $34 per hour. Reporting Specialists start around $6–$9 and reach $14–$20; Data Analysts and SQL Analysts run $11–$18 mid-level and $17–$28 senior; and senior Business Analysts reach $19–$30, with Business Intelligence Analysts at $22–$34 on complex data stacks. SQL first, and properly. PostgreSQL, MySQL, or Microsoft SQL Server are all fine to learn on, and the skill transfers. Then pick a visualization tool: Power BI, Tableau, Looker Studio, or Metabase. Keep your Excel and Google Sheets sharp, because a surprising share of the work still lands there. Warehouse familiarity with BigQuery, Snowflake, or Redshift is what moves you from reporting into analyst pay bands, and understanding how data gets loaded and transformed makes you far easier to hire. Python is optional but widens the field.
