How much do online UI/UX designer jobs pay?
Your rate in this role is settled by your portfolio long before anyone asks what you charge. Two designers with the same three years of experience can be $10 an hour apart because one shows finished screens and the other shows the problem, the research, the decision, and what changed after launch. Entry work usually means drawing screens inside a design system somebody else built, with a senior reviewing you. The pay climbs when you can own a whole flow: research it, map it, prototype it, and hand it to developers so cleanly that nobody has to message you. Product complexity matters too, since fintech, healthcare, and data-heavy SaaS pay above marketing sites. So does a design system you built and maintained yourself. Across all tiers the span runs roughly $10 to $34 an hour, paid to you directly in USD, and FindTalent takes none of it.

Skills employers look for in UI/UX designers
- Figma craft: components, variants, auto-layout: Employers open your Figma file, not only the exported images. They check whether layers are named, whether repeated elements are real components with variants, and whether auto-layout survives when they drag a frame wider. Keep one public file that is tidy on purpose. A messy file quietly undoes a set of beautiful screens.
- Case studies, not a screenshot gallery: A reviewer gives your portfolio about two minutes. Each case study should say what the problem was, what you learned, which decision you made, and what changed afterwards. Three deep case studies beat twenty polished screens. Include an early version you rejected and explain why; that one paragraph does more for you than another dribbble shot.
- UX research and usability testing: Expect the question: name one research finding that changed your design. Have it ready with the method (five user interviews, an unmoderated test on Maze or UserTesting) and the exact change you made. If you have never run a study, run one on any public app, write it up honestly, and put it in your portfolio as a self-directed project.
- Information architecture and user flows: Put at least one flow diagram or sitemap in your portfolio and be ready to talk through the logic on a call: why this step precedes that one, what happens on error, what the empty state looks like. Designers who only present the happy path get read as junior, whatever the visuals look like.
- Design systems and accessibility: Tokens, a type scale, spacing rules, and documented components with usage notes are what let a small team ship consistently. Build one, even for a personal project. Include contrast ratios, touch target sizes, and keyboard focus states, because accessibility now shows up in job requirements rather than as a nice extra.
- Developer handoff documentation: The real test is whether a developer can build your screen without messaging you. Annotate spacing, type, color tokens, every state (hover, disabled, loading, error, empty), and what happens on a narrow screen. Put one annotated frame in your portfolio. Hiring managers who have shipped a product notice it within seconds.
Frequently asked questions
Can I get a UI/UX designer job with no experience?
Yes, but only with a portfolio, because this role is judged on work samples rather than employment history. Redesign a real app you use, run a small usability test on it, and document the whole process as one honest case study. Two self-directed case studies with clear reasoning will get you further than a design certificate with nothing attached to it.
Are part-time or night-shift design jobs available?
Both exist. Design is largely async, so many employers only ask for a few hours of overlap for standups and design reviews rather than a full graveyard shift. US teams often want you online for their morning, which is late evening in Manila. Part-time and per-project contracts are common, and plenty of designers hold one retainer plus occasional project work.
How do I get paid?
Directly by your employer in USD, normally through Wise, PayPal, or direct deposit. FindTalent never takes a cut and never holds your money. For per-project work, agree milestones in writing before you start: a deposit, a payment at high-fidelity designs, and the balance at handoff is a fair and common structure.
What equipment do I need?
Figma runs in the browser, so the bar is a computer with at least 8GB of RAM (16GB if you also work in video or 3D) and a stable 10+ Mbps connection for screen shares. A larger, color-accurate monitor pays for itself. If you design mobile products, keep a phone handy to preview real screens through the Figma app.
How fast can I start?
Profile review takes 1-2 days. After that you apply and message employers directly, and most design hires reach a signed offer inside two weeks. Design moves slightly slower than support roles because reviewers read case studies and usually run a portfolio walkthrough call. Having your portfolio link and one case study ready to present is what keeps it short.
Should I do a free design test?
A short timeboxed exercise on a made-up product, three or four hours with feedback promised, is normal and worth doing. Walk away when the brief is an actual production screen, when there is no brief at all, when it stretches past a day, or when several candidates are asked to solve the same live problem unpaid. Ask for the task to be paid; serious employers say yes.
What does the career path look like?
The usual ladder runs junior designer, product designer, senior, then design lead or specialist in research or design systems. Moving up means owning outcomes rather than screens: framing the problem, defending decisions with evidence, and unblocking developers. Picking an industry helps as well, since fintech, healthcare, and analytics products pay more because fewer designers understand them.
